STAINLESS STEEL SUCTION LYSIMETERS (for organics) - SW 070 series

What do I measure?

The collected soil solution isn’t contaminated by elements contained in the system. Thus, it can be used to analyse organic as well as inorganic contents

Suction cells collect pore water out of unsaturated soil. A constant vacuum source draws pore water into the cell through a porous stainless stell membrane. Pore water samples are brought to the surface by applying vacuum or pressure. Suction cells are most suitable in moist soil (tension less than 500 mbar) and can also be used below the water table.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

•Built with welded 316 stainless steel. •
No glue or plastics are used. •
Suitable for organics and most inorganics. •
Separate upper chamber for sample storage (model SW 070).
One way stainless steel valve prevents back flow between storage chamber and sample chamber (model SW 070). •
Strong and durable.
Suitable for installation at great depths. •
500 mbar bubbling pressure.

DOUBLE CHAMBER LYSIMETER for sampling > 3m – SW 070

During sampling, vacuum is applied to the vacuum/pressure line, while keeping the fluid return line closed. For most soil the optimum vaccum is about 300 mbar. The partial vacuum in the cell draws pore water into the lower chamber of the cell through its porous stainless steel walls. Then it is drawn into the upper chamber where it is stored. The fluid is brought to the surface by applying positive pressure to the vacuum/pressure line and opening the fluid return line, forcing the fluid up to the surface and into a collection bottle. A stainless steel check valve prevents back flow of the fluid between the upper chamber into the lower chamber and the soil around the extractor cell. Sampling duration depends on the amount of sample : it can vary between less than one hour in wet soil, to more than one day in drier soil.

SINGLE CHAMBER LYSIMETER for sampling < 3m – SW 071

During sampling, vacuum is applied to the vacuum/pressure line, while keeping the fluid return line closed. For most soil the optimum vaccum is about 300 mbar. The partial vacuum in the cell draws pore water into the system (cell) through its porous stainless steel walls of the upper part. The fluid is brought to the surface by applying positive pressure to the vacuum/pressure line and opening the fluid return line. Tha applied pressure forces the fluid up to the surface and into the collection bottle. Sampling duration depends on the amount of sampl. It can vary between less than one hour in wet soil, to more than one day in drier soil.

The standard set

Each cell model (SW 070, SW 071, SW 074) is delivered alone without tubing The vacuum pump, ref. SPS 400 must be ordered separately

You also need

. Stainless steel or PE tubing.
. Stainless steel two-way valves.
. An installation auger.

Can the collected solution be used for trace metals measurements ?

For trace metals analysis in soil solution, we recommend the use of a more inert material than a porous ceramic or stainless steel cell to collect the solution, such as the PTFE lysimeters or the RHIZON M.O.M micro sampler if you need to sample in soil columns.
